Hi blog friends!

I have to tell you that I had a very fun Halloween weekend. My biggest dilemma, however, was which Halloween costume to pick.

You know that I love dressing up. First I thought I would be Little Red Ridinghood, since I like adventure…but I didn’t think I’d be able to run like I like to. “Maybe I should be Wonder Woman? Yes, of course! I’ll go out and catch bad guys!” But it was Halloween and I really wanted to stay home and wait for the trick-or-treaters… “Let me think,” I said to myself, “I know! I will be a scary small dragon! I am sure they’ll get scared! Ha!” And that’s how I decided…

Here I am by the windown ready for the trick-or-treaters!

Mission accomplished! The kids were so scared when they saw me that I had no choice but to bark so they would not it was me, Niqqi, disguised as a dragon!

And you know what? I would love to see what you were for Halloween!  I’m putting together a photo parade of my anipals dressed for Halloween! It’s almost Halloween! If you haven’t found the right dog costume to wear for this great occasion, here are some last minute ideas you can make yourself…and there’s no sewing required

This Halloween I will roar “trick or treat” and will definitely surprise my neighbors! This dragon costume was very easy to make.

First, we needed some measurements:

A - B

A – From my neck to my eyes; B – From my neck to my tail.

C - D

C – My tail front to back plus more if you want the dragon’s  tail longer;
D – Around my belly plus 2 inches. Then I divided that figure in half.

E - F

E – From my neck to the middle point of my front leg;
F – From the middle point of my front leg to the middle point of my hind leg.

H - G

H – My upper leg width; G – From my back down to where my legs start.

Once I took all the measurements, I laid them out on a piece of paper like this to make a pattern.

Then I cut out the parts I didn’t need.

MATERIALS USED

*Green felt – This is the base for the costume, so make sure that you get a piece that’s at least the sum of measurements A, B & C, and twice the measurements of D
*Yellow felt for the triangular back plates
*Red and black felt for the eyes, nostrils and tongue
*Fabric glue, silicone glue and glue gun, or contact cement
*Scissors
*Velcro
*Stuffing

INSTRUCTIONS:

Measure the green felt so that its length is the sum of measurements A, B and C, and its width is measurement D multiplied by 2. Fold in half lenghwise. Lay pattern over the felt. Cut out all excess material.

This is what it should look like when you’re done cutting.

Glue the tail together. Glue Velcro on the edges as shown.

Stuff the tail with filler or stuffing. Try on to make sure it fits.

To make the triangular plates, fold some yellow felt in half. The height will be at your discretion. Draw the triangular plates ans shown, leaving a little space in between them.

Cut and glue together.

Glue the triangular plates in place on the back of the costume.

Cut pieces of felt to make the eyes, nostril and tongue and glue in place.

This is what the finished piece should look like! Make a slit at the neck to fish through the collar ring.

Guid mornin everyone!

Today, October 11, 2009, I am taking my Twitter friends on another submarine adventure!  This time we are meeting at Urquhart Castle in northern Scotland.  We are going to explore the cold, dark and murky waters of Loch Ness in a submarine my dad made especially for us:  The DOGFISH!  Our goal is to come face to face with the legendary Loch Ness Monster!!  We are going to have a #LochNessPawty!

X marks the spot of our meeting! Anipals from all corners of the world are coming to embark into this exciting expedition!  We have representatives from the Scotland, England and Ireland, Germany, Egypt, Canada, Brazil, Croatia,  the U.S.  and many other places!  I am thankful to my friends @no_crybaby_doGs for suggesting this party, @Pandafur and @SnowyDaze for picking up anipals on their super fast jets, @Dogstoyevsky for bringing the trawler Atlantis with many onboard,  @EmmyTheCat for lending her supersonic Eco-Copter, and to @OatieDog for volunteering her submarine to give tours to those who came in at the last minute.  I also want to thank all of you who offered to D.J. and to those who  are bringing beverages,  treats, nets and harnesses, maps, scuba suits, and gas masks in case somone feels compelled to pass gas in the submarines.  

But especially I’d like to thank THE CREW and my crazy parents:   You made this fantasy possible!

It will be a day filled with food, games, excursions and tours, submarine rides and, above all, a chance for all of us to be together and have fun!  So here is to you, my friends–have a great #LochNessPawty!

My mom and I designed this Hawaiian hula dancer costume. It was really easy to make!

First, make sure you get some measurements:

A – B

A – Around the chest * B – Around the waist

C - D

C – From the waist to the tail * D – Aroud the neck to the chest

MATERIALS USED:

 

Raffia
Cord or elastic
Flowery ribbon
Two seashells and pink paint
Two hydrangeas, or a store bought lei and wreath
Scissors, gluegun and gluesticks

DIRECTIONS:

1) Cut a cord with measurement “B” plus 4″
2) Paint two seashells pink

3) Double up a bunch of raffia strands and cut at measurement “C”
4) Slip the strands of raffia under the cord or elastic

5) Make a raffia hoop on one side of the raffia
6) Pass the loose strands through to the other side to tie a knot

7) Make a tight knot
Repeat to make the skirt, leaving 2″ on either side

9) Cut two pieces of ribbon: #1–measurement “A” plus 2″, #2– measurement “D” plus 2″, folding “D” in half
10) Slip ribbon “D” under ribbon “A”  and then through the hoop to make a tight knot

11) Glue some velcro to each end of the ribbon
13) Try on to make sure everything fits right

13) Glue the sea sells to the piece of ribbon for measurement “A”
14) Here Niqqi shows you what the top should look like when finished

15) Tie the skirt around the waist
16) You can make a lei and a wreath by glueing small flowers onto a cord

17) Niqqi loves her Hawaiian hula dancer costume…so much that
18) She dances a hula dance!

Hi Everyone!

September 12th to the 20th will be a week 5,000 of my fellow dogs will always remember!   For one, they will be flying in an airplane–most likely for the first time–but most importantly, it will be their flight to freedom.

Rommel And His Pilot Patrick

Debi Boies is the co-founder of Pilots-N-Paws, a group of dedicated animal lover pilots who volunteer to fly dogs who are facing imminent demise to loving homes and no-kill shelters.  In an interview with Kate Snow of Good Morning America, Debi Boies said Pilots-N-Paws hopes to fly 5,000 animals this week.  The average trip costs about $2,000 per dog, but it’s tax deductible.  5,000 animals and a million smiles!

Pilots-N-Paws has already rescued thousands of animals.  Their stories are told in three incredible photo albums:  Album 1, Album 2, and Album 3.  Rommel’s voyage, “Saving Rommel,”  was also documented on YouTube and it’s worth watching!

So, if you don’t have an airplane and can’t volunteer for this outstanding mission, take your bike, take your car, the bus, or simply your feet.  There are many of us who would love a home today.  You have to take the first step.
